After assessing the timing and likely impact of the incoming storm with the Department of Public Works, I have determined that we cannot open schools safely tomorrow.  The 无尽资源采集 will be closed on Friday, January 7, 2022.  No staff should report to their buildings as the Town works to clear roads, sidewalks and parking lots.  Please remain safe everyone.

Colleagues,

I hope you each had a restful February break.  This was a busy week back on many fronts.  First, I want to thank the Joint Health and Safety Committee for approving our new COVID Dashboard which will be posted on our website this weekend.  Second, you may have seen the Commissioner鈥檚 announcement on Tuesday that he intends to bring a proposal before the State Board of Education to begin phasing in full, in-person learning schedules, starting with grades K-5, during the first week of April.  This would be followed by a similar transition later in the spring at the middle and high school grades.  We were disappointed that this message was not coupled with a specific window for educators to begin receiving vaccinations, which we still hope will happen in March. Please that the School Committee and I drafted and sent to state officials this week.

Regardless of the path being charted by the state, the Administration is committed to working collaboratively with our staff to begin addressing the factors that will allow us to expand our current reopening efforts.  For example, there is a great deal of science now supporting the efficacy of 3-feet of social distancing in schools, when coupled with other safety measures.  At the same time, we recognize there are specific operational questions, such as managing lunches, that create concerns when thinking about adopting this new standard.  Similarly, we also believe that by expanding our weekly surveillance testing to include students in Grades 3-5, we can create an additional level of safety assurance as we move forward.  Finally, we also want to be sure that any of these steps are preceded by opportunities for education and dialogue.  The Administration and WEA will be working through the Joint Health and Safety Committee in the coming week to discuss these and other topics.

Please stay safe this weekend and thanks for all that you do for our students each day.

-David

Colleagues,

I hope you each had a productive week as winter appears to be making a roaring comeback.  A few updates from the past few days.  First, on Tuesday night the School Committee approved our budget for FY22.  This is certainly a lean budget, although I want to emphasize that this is not a reflection of our community鈥檚 desire to invest in our collective work.  Rather, this budget reflects the challenging fiscal reality before our community鈥攁nd all communities鈥攁s a result of the pandemic.  My hope is that we can return to investing in our strategic priorities again with the budget we will build next year.

Most importantly, I want to highlight the Middle School announcement yesterday that WMS will be hanging a Black Lives Matter flag in the school.  I applaud this action, which both reflects the sentiments of the WMS school community as well as our broader District Core Values.  Our nation鈥檚 history is fraught with examples of injustice and systemic racism directed toward the Black community.  无尽资源采集 is not immune from this pattern either as a community or a school district.  Of course we believe that all lives matter, but we would be na茂ve to believe this is true when held against the painful reality that members of the Black community live each day.  Displaying a Black Lives Matter flag at school is not a political statement, but rather a statement of human rights and an affirmation of our core beliefs.  For Black members of our school community, whether they be students, staff, or parents, I hope this also stands as a symbol of their inclusion and belonging as members of our school community.

For all of these reasons, our District leadership team believes that the scale of this conversation needs to be broader than just a single school.  With this in mind, each of our principals will be engaging with their respective staff upon returning from the February break to discuss similar action across the district.  Speaking with one voice to reinforce our belief that Black Lives Matter is an important step in our effort to be unambiguous about our values in WPS.  My thanks again to our colleagues at WMS for leading the way in this important conversation.

Please stay safe throughout this well-deserved February break and thanks for all that you do for our students each day.

(The following Superintendent’s Bulletin was prepared for release on Friday, 2/5/21, but was delayed due to technical difficulties.)

Colleagues,

I hope everyone had a productive week and I appreciate your flexibility in adjusting to our early release on Monday and remote learning day on Tuesday.  As a reminder, we will continue using remote learning days in lieu of snow days for this year.  One of the key reasons we are doing this, which is unique to 无尽资源采集, is that our Middle School Renovation project must begin the day that school ends in June in order to be completed in time to reopen schools in the fall.  Because the WMS cafeteria is used to prepare food for all elementary schools, any delay will create significant operational challenges for us in September.

I have no new news to report on the vaccine front other than my continued advocacy for the state to move educators up on the vaccine timeline.  Along with our School Committee and the WEA, we are united in our belief that public education deserves to be a higher priority in this process.

Finally, our team is beginning to work through the logistics of what a spring MCAS administration may look like.  The challenges of this are significant given our hybrid schedule, and I continue to believe that we should not be taking time out of our already shortened year to be offering this exam.  At the state level, I and many other colleagues are using our collective voices to lobby the state to waive MCAS this year to prevent even more disruption to our schedule and learning this spring.

Please be stay safe throughout this Super Bowl weekend and thanks for all that you do for our students each day.

-David

CORONAVIRUS CASE UPDATE FROM WELLESLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND WELLESLEY HEALTH DEPARTMENT FOR NOVEMBER 15, 2020

Following trends throughout the Commonwealth, the 无尽资源采集 Health Department today announced that COVID-19 cases are increasing in our community and at our colleges. Officials are reporting evidence of community spread and are urging everyone to continue to do their part and follow all current guidelines.

Also today, 无尽资源采集 and the Health Department issued the following message to the community about additional confirmed cases at 无尽资源采集 High School. These new cases are related to positive cases identified last week. .

Dear Members of the 无尽资源采集 Community,

We write to share an update on the number of positive COVID-19 cases that have continued to be identified at 无尽资源采集 High School.  At the time of our joint message last Wednesday, eight cases had been identified in less than one week.  Following that announcement, additional positive cases have been confirmed, bringing that total now to 13 positive cases within 11 days.  While these cases have included both students and staff, the majority of the cases have been adult members of the WHS staff, with strong evidence of in-school transmission. At this point in time, these cases have not impacted any other school.

Based on both the prior and active contact tracing related to these cases completed in close collaboration between the 无尽资源采集 and 无尽资源采集 Department of Health, we are continuing to conduct a detailed analysis of the cause(s) of this cluster to help guide any further mitigation steps we can take prior to WHS reopening after Thanksgiving.

We recognize that this news is disconcerting given the many safety layers that were already in place at WHS and across all schools.  We will continue to do everything we can to support the safe, continued operations of the 无尽资源采集 moving forward.

As always, we each have a role to play in stopping the spread of the virus, including wearing masks, washing our hands, social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings.  All of these steps will be particularly important to follow as we approach the holiday season.

Thanks for your continued support.

Colleagues,

We recently announced the bittersweet news that Hardy Principal Charlene Cook will be retiring at the end of the year. Charlene鈥檚 career in public education has spanned three decades, the last seven of which have been here in 无尽资源采集. For those of you who have worked with Charlene, I don鈥檛 have to tell you what an incredible educator she is. She will be sorely missed at Hardy and as a member of our District leadership team.

We have begun the search process to hire a new Hardy principal, with the goal of making an appointment by the end of March. If you know of colleagues from your networks whom you believe may be a good fit for Hardy and our District, please encourage them to apply.

Thanks for all that you do each day for our students. Have a great Super Bowl weekend!

Best regards,

David

Colleagues,

This was a very busy week and in particular, I want to thank the many WMS and WHS colleagues who attended the joint PTO/PTSO meeting in Boston on Tuesday night. Each year, this is a chance to maintain an important dialogue between and among our families and staff. At the meeting, I mentioned the important difference between being a district with a METCO program and being a METCO district.  The former is grounded in the operational details of managing a program. The latter represents a much broader commitment to equity that everyone both recognizes and feels a responsibility for maintaining.  While I hope we collectively aspire to be this latter district, we are not there yet. I think it鈥檚 too easy for our community and district to feel self-congratulatory that we are among the original districts to participate in the METCO program, which we have continued to do for more than 50 years.   Beyond that, what are our measures of success? We should all be shocked that the percentage of METCO students identified for IEPs shifts from 12 percent at the elementary level to 28 percent at the middle school, to 51 percent at the high school.  Just over 70 percent of this year鈥檚 graduating class of METCO seniors has an IEP. As I鈥檝e noted about other examples of disproportionality in the past, these data suggest less about our students and their ability and much more about us as the educators and the expectations we have for our students. Being a METCO district means that we should find these data unacceptable and feel an urgency to act in each of our respective capacities.

The parents I met in Boston Tuesday night are counting on us to do our very best for their students each day. As we head into this Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend, I challenge all of us to consider how we can better keep this promise to these parents and their children.

Best regards,

David

Colleagues,

Happy Friday! On Tuesday night this week, we made several important presentations to the School Committee on our district progress.  The first was an overview of our 2019 MCAS results.  As you know, MCAS has never represented our gold standard for progress and doesn鈥檛 come close to assessing everything we teach and value in our schools.  At the same time, MCAS does provide important district-wide trend data, particularly as it reflects opportunity gaps within and among student groups.  We have been clear that success for 鈥渕ost鈥 students is not good enough.  Our goal is to support the success of ALL students. I wish the new state accountability system was less technical with results that were easier to discern.  If you visit the following , you can view our summary presentation and I ask that you pay particular attention to the takeaways from each section, which focus on how these results can help inform our practice.

Another important Tuesday night was focused on our PISA results from 2019.  PISA is an international assessment of 15-year old students from around the world, with results that are most often reported by nation.  Several years ago, we were presented with a unique opportunity to participate as a district, allowing us to benchmark ourselves in a global context.  This is the second time we have participated in PISA and our results again were very strong.  Students in 无尽资源采集 had mean scale scores in reading, math, and science that were higher than participating countries such as Singapore, China, Finland, and Germany. At the same time, our PISA results also surfaced some information which should also draw our attention. For example, our students are much more likely to be 鈥渄eep and highly-restricted鈥 readers than 鈥渄eep and wide鈥 readers.  This gap has increased over the past two years.  Some initial discussions of why this might be the case suggest that as our students progress from elementary and middle to high school, their reading becomes more specialized and tied to specific coursework.  We also know that student schedules only become more frenetic as they get older with so many athletic and extracurricular activities.  In short, there鈥檚 not a lot of time for reading for pleasure. I encourage you to read the full report for more details and would love to generate more conversation around this topic.

Finally, we also presented the of our most recent NEASC Accreditation cycle at 无尽资源采集 High School. The good news is that our accreditation has been renewed for another 10-years.  This was the result of a significant amount of work by our colleagues at WHS these past 2+ years. I encourage you to look at the summary presentation.  I am so proud of the many commendations for Dr. Chisum and the WHS team that I believe are also reflective of our district as a whole.

Taken together, these three reports provide quite a broad look at the work of the 无尽资源采集.  It is certainly affirming to see our excellence highlighted in so many ways that is a testament to your good work each day in our schools.  At the same time, we still have important work to do to help ensure that this excellence is reflected in the progress of all students. We must not rest on our laurels, but we should take great pride in our collective work as we remain committed to continuous improvement.

Best regards,

David

Colleagues,

Happy new year! I hope you each enjoyed the holiday break and found some down-time among the many festivities and family gatherings. I also hope our two-day week has allowed you to ease into the new year and get your sea legs back.听

We have a busy month coming up with more public work on our FY21 Budget,听as well as community forums on the Upham/Hardy project and draft elementary redistricting scenarios.

My wish for all of us in this new year is that we take time to attend to our own physical and emotional wellness.听 By investing in ourselves outside of work, we will almost certainly be better able to support our students at school.听 Enjoy the first weekend of the new year and don鈥檛 forget to root for the Pats tomorrow!

Best regards,
