Dear Colleagues,

We had an excellent WHS graduation on Friday. I want to thank our High School leadership team and custodial staff for their tremendous efforts in making this a memorable ceremony each year.

On Tuesday night this week, a Special Town Meeting was convened for the purpose of considering funding for a feasibility study of the Hunnewell School and site. After a robust presentation and discussion, Town Meeting members overwhelming approved moving forward. What this will mean in the coming year is a detailed examination of what is possible on the Hunnewell site. This will include confirming what size school can be built, examining swing space options, as well as options for the ever-present challenge of parking. Until we have this detailed information, the Town can鈥檛 really make any decisions, so this is a critical first step.

We also had our final Central Council meeting of the year this week, where we honored the work of our outgoing PTO leaders and welcomed new colleagues. I can鈥檛 say enough about the support we receive from our PTOs and the partners who step forward to volunteer each year. Please find a moment to thank your school PTO leaders before the end of the school year.

Thank you for all that you do to support our students each day and have a great weekend.

Best regards,
David Lussier

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to June! Today is also graduation day at 无尽资源采集 High School and four hundred of our students will be recognized for earning their diplomas. Each year I look forward to commencement as I believe it represents our capstone project as a school district. From PreK through senior year, our team of educators and support staff have provided an exceptional education experience that has put our students on a path to success. I hope to see many of you at the ceremony today, but whether or not you are in attendance, you should feel proud of the accomplishment of our graduating class and I know our community is in your debt.

Thank you for all that you do to support our students each day and have a great weekend.

Dear Colleagues,

I鈥檝e been thinking about the importance of civility a great deal in the past week. At the national level, I can鈥檛 remember a time when the political landscape was more toxic than it is at present. Something is wrong when a White House staffer鈥檚 joke about Senator McCain鈥檚 death doesn鈥檛 warrant action, or at the very least, an apology. This is not ok.

We are not immune to this tone within our own community. Recently, commentary associated with Hardy, Hunnewell, and Upham projects has included attacks on people鈥檚 integrity and even the call for a member of Town Meeting to be censured given the continued ad hominem nature of his communications.

Civility doesn鈥檛 mean we must all agree on issues. Quite the contrary. What is does mean, however, is that we can disagree while still being respectful. And when we are not sure of someone鈥檚 intentions, let鈥檚 assume they are positive. Even better, let鈥檚 start by trying to understand someone鈥檚 alternative perspective and maintain an openness to shifting our own deeply-held positions.

I fear technology, and social media in particular, have made this problem worse. The internet allows us to join echo chambers of our own interests where positions become crystallized, often based on conjecture and false facts. It鈥檚 easy to forget norms of civility when you are shouting from a keyboard.

As an educator, my primary concern is the impact that this lack of civility may have on our students. They are surely watching and listening. My hope is that in the 无尽资源采集, our students learn how to debate the merits of an issue without feeling they must vanquish an enemy in the process.

Reinforcing the importance of civility is everyone鈥檚 work, and I challenge all of us to consider ways we can do so through our work together.

Enjoy the weekend and thank you for all that you do to support our students each day.

Best regards,
David Lussier

Dear Colleagues,

I鈥檝e never met a person who was unable to name the teacher(s) who had a profound impact on his/her life. The legacy of great teachers lives long beyond the time that students spend in their classrooms. This is particularly true for those of us who go on to become educators and whose work reflects the wisdom and influence of these giants in our own lives. During Teacher Appreciation Week each year, it is my hope that your influence will also include the inspiration for the best of our students to consider becoming teachers themselves in the future.

This week we also learned the very sad news of the loss of our friend and fellow educator, Cynthia Goodhue. Cynthia served as a substitute teacher, often in PE and Health classes, throughout the District and most recently was serving as a teaching assistant at the Fiske Elementary School. Cynthia also lived in 无尽资源采集 for many years and her daughters were educated in the 无尽资源采集. In short, Cynthia was well known both within our District and our broader community.

Appropriately, there was a tremendous turnout today at the Village Church for a moving celebration of Cynthia鈥檚 life. In listening to the many anecdotes shared both during and after the service, it is clear that Cynthia had a zest for life that was evident to everyone she met. From the rainbow on her garage, to her love of hats, to her passion for skiing and cycling, to her love for her family, Cynthia didn鈥檛 seem interested in wasting a minute of her life. And what a beautiful life it was. On behalf of a grateful community, Godspeed Cynthia Goodhue.

Enjoy the weekend and thank you for all that you do to support our students each day.

Best regards,

David Lussier

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to May! (Although it feels like July.) Next week, I will be formally announcing at our School Committee meeting that, barring any unforeseen event(s), the last day of the school year for students will be Wednesday, June 20th, which is a half-day. The last day for teachers will be Thursday, June 21st.

This week, I鈥檝e been thinking a lot about the evolution of school reform in public education. In recent years, we have been working to integrate 21st Century learning competencies into our curricula. Project-based learning is a great example of how these competencies are being embedded within our classrooms.

So what comes next? Earlier this year, I was at a conference where our colleague Ken Kay was asked to look out over the horizon and predict the next wave of school reform. He responded not by framing a radical re-direction or substantially different vision. Rather, he talked about going deeper with an approach already being advocated by he and his colleagues at EdLeader21. In particular, he expressed his hope that schools will increasingly look to align their curricula with real issues and problems from their communities. I think there is great wisdom in this approach.

As we think about ways to create greater student engagement, it鈥檚 critical that students see relevance in the tasks we create for them. What better way to showcase relevance than to invite students into problem-solving on issues they are likely to see first-hand in their community?

This week, I was reminded of examples of this approach already in place in WPS. On Wednesday at Schofield, students took part in a 鈥淒ay of Imagineering鈥 in which they were challenged to deploy their creativity in solving problems present in their school community. The issues students chose to engage included addressing food allergies, accessing tall lockers, dealing with snowmelt on boots and shoes, and even student loneliness. Talk about creative problem solving!

Last month, WHS students in the Evolutions course showcased art installations based on themes present in the Town鈥檚 new Unified Plan. These creative expressions touched upon important topics including the need to protect the environment and consider sustainability, encouraging economic growth, expanding affordable housing, and developing better transportation options.

Another example is a great, cross-district collaboration this year between Irene Gruenefeld of Bates and Annie Gayner from Fiske. Irene and Annie were members of the first cohort of WPS teachers trained by the Buck Institute for Education to implement project-based learning in their classrooms. They collaborated on a PBL unit for their fourth graders to address ways to reduce erosion at Morse鈥檚 Pond. We just learned that Irene鈥檚 and Annie鈥檚 efforts will be recognized by The Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs at a ceremony at the State House later this month. Congratulations to Irene and Annie!

This summer approximately 80 WPS teachers will also engage in PBL training with the Buck Institute. It鈥檚 my hope that we will continue to expand this type of professional development that ultimately encourages our students to think critically and creatively about issues that affect their community.

Enjoy the weekend and thank you for all that you do to support our students each day.

Best regards,

David Lussier

Dear Colleagues,

I hope everyone had a restful April vacation. The sprint to June 20th has begun and I appreciate how busy these next eight weeks will be for our entire team.

Earlier this week, I was interviewed by two WHS students as part of their senior project compiling a photo-biography book of Town leaders and other members of our community. One of the questions they asked me was what I liked about working in 无尽资源采集? It won鈥檛 surprise you to learn that my answer focused on the degree to which this community cares a great deal about providing a world-class education to students. After the interview was over, I continued to think about that question and throughout the week, I have been reminded of some of the diverse learning experiences available to our students.

For example, 36 art students from WHS traveled to Greece and Italy for 12 days to explore the artistic treasures and cultures of both countries. (Thank you Mr. Carter!)

The Masterwork Concert last night at WHS showcased our choral and instrumental students as they performed complex pieces with an incredible level of sophistication and mastery. Listening to Mozart鈥檚 Coronation Mass, it was easy to forget that these were high school students! (Thank you Michael LaCava, Kevin McDonald, Sergei Khanukaev, and Steve Scott!)

The WMS Mini-Marathon was held on Thursday, representing a two-mile physical fitness capstone that has become a long-standing tradition at the middle school. (Thank you Mark Ito, the Fitness and Health Department, and to all of the WMS staff!)

The METCO Senior Night was held on Thursday night, in which our seniors shared powerful reflections on their experiences participating in this program. There were hard truths to be heard but there was also a strong sense of the bonds that have been established between and among students and parents. (Thank you Kalise Wornum, Grant Hightower, Cynthia Russell, and Carla Lumley!)

I could go on naming the many elementary field trips (thank you Carolyn Collins for organizing the elementary geology field trips!) and other opportunities for our students just in the past week. The work happening in WPS is truly extraordinary. I hope when you are ever asked what makes this community special, you feel the same sense of pride.

Enjoy the weekend and thank you for all that you do to support our students each day.

Best regards,

David Lussier

This week, Town Meeting approved the proposed school budget for FY19. Our 3.5 percent increase over FY18 will primarily allow us to maintain our current work, while still offering opportunities for new investments in targeted areas. For example, I am pleased that we will be funding additional tiered supports for general education students at both the Middle and High Schools. Our Elementary World Language Program will continue its rollout next year at Grades K-5 at Hardy and Sprague, and expanding to K-4 at the remaining elementary schools. We are also increasing time for an Occupational Therapist at PAWS and have eliminated fees for Key Club and the National Honor Society at WHS. Again, these are just examples of what is included in the budget that was just passed. We remain grateful for the support of schools by the 无尽资源采集 community.

Additionally, there was a robust conversation at Town Meeting about adding new School Resource Officers (SROs). Officer Rosenberg does a great job of working with us, but we recommended the addition of another officer to better support all ten of our schools. We continue to believe that while the position of an SRO is an important one, so too are the many roles already in place (counselors, psychologists, social worker) that play a vital role in developing and maintaining healthy relationships with our students and their families.

Enjoy the weekend and thank you for all that you do to support our students each day.

Best regards,
David Lussier
