I hope you each had a productive week. This week, I had the chance to attend the WHS Evolutions Spring Expo on Tuesday night and see the capstone projects of our students. They were truly impressive on many fronts.  First, students chose topics that were relevant to them.  This ranged from an effort to support homeless veterans, analyzing the impact of U.S. Department of Education cuts on first generation, college-bound students, creating healthy snack bars, and even the construction of a bass boat for fishing.  While the topics were diverse, what was consistent was the obvious deep learning of our students, their ownership of their work, and their ability to enthusiastically engage in thoughtful conversations with the many participants who stopped by each station.  So many wonderful elements of student agency were on full display and I鈥檓 grateful to our Evolutions educators who provide this innovative learning space for our students.  

Speaking of capstones, today is our WHS graduation and 329 seniors will be accepting their hard-earned diplomas.   I鈥檓 so proud of our graduates and equally proud of the team of educators who have supported these young people along their path to our stage tonight.  Take a well-deserved bow, WPS, on a job well done!  Have a great weekend everyone!

I know these final weeks of the school year feel frenetic with so many end-of-year activities underway.  Our WHS Seniors completed their last day of classes this week and have begun their many activities鈥攊ncluding last night鈥檚 prom鈥攁s they move closer to graduation next Friday.  

I was delighted to participate in the senior project debriefing that occurred on Wednesday.  Our students were incredibly reflective on their individual experiences and how they hope to leverage that learning as they leave our district.  Many thanks to our high school team for all of their extra work to make this time so special for our graduating class! 

I also want to give two more shout-outs to staff members for their work.  First, to our WHS colleague Amie Larson, whose ceramics intensive students held an art exhibit last week in Needham.  Not only was the work exceptional, but the student commentary on their individual pieces was emblematic of both their learning and the importance of the visual arts in our curriculum.  Please check out this video and you will be inspired:

After a year of study, we brought forward the of the cell phone working group on Tuesday evening at the .  These recommendations outline expectations and procedures at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and also include suggestions for broader community action.  I鈥檇 like to thank the students, staff, and parents/caregivers whose efforts this year to examine this topic led to these recommendations, which we will operationalize beginning in SY2025-26.  

I also want to give a shout-out to our student services department for the innovative proposal they have brought forward to relocate our Launch program to the campus of Regis College.  This program serves our 18鈥�22 year-old students and this new venue and partnership with Regis College will open up many exciting options for the future of this program.

I hope you each had a productive week.  This was Teacher Appreciation week across the country, with educators being honored for the vital role they play in the lives of our students.  In two of the staff coffees I hosted this week, I shared my recognition that the job of teaching has likely never felt more challenging.  Schools have increasingly borne the burden of new responsibilities and increased expectations.  Attending to our students鈥� academic and social and emotional health is no small task, and I鈥檓 so proud of the work of our staff across the district each day!  

I also want to share some staff recognitions this week.  First, congratulations to Dr. Hannah Tolla, our Director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Accountability on her completion of DESE鈥檚 Influence 100 Fellowship.  This two-year fellowship is organized in a cohort model aimed at developing a more diverse group of superintendents and district leaders prepared to lead on behalf of all students.  

I also want to welcome two new colleagues, who will be joining us at the Central Office next week:

District Registrar: Angelo Perez 

Angelo has worked as the Office Manager for Barbieri Elementary School in Framingham.  Prior to his work in Framingham, he worked as a Social Work Technician for the MA Department of Children and Family Services and a Customer Service Representative for MassMutual.  Angelo earned his degree from Nyeck College, School of Music. 

Director of Finance and Business Operations: Sarah Butler

Sarah has worked for the City of Brockton and Brockton Public Schools for the past five years.  On the city side, she worked as a Financial Analyst.  On the school side, she has worked as an Accountant and the Budget Director.  She is knowledgeable in procurement, budget management, financial analysis, grant management, and food service management.  In addition, Sarah is familiar with food service provider, Chartwells, which will be helpful as we transition from Whitsons to Chartwells this summer.  Sarah earned her undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance, as well as her graduate degree in Accountancy from Bridgewater State University.

I hope your first week back from the April vacation was a good one. The beautiful spring weather we鈥檝e had has been wonderful as we enter the final leg of the school year.  

I want to acknowledge the passing of Pope Francis last week.  Regardless of one鈥檚 religious affiliation, Pope Francis was recognized for the humility and humanity he exemplified during his tenure, which we could surely use more of in our world leaders today.

I also want to note the important literacy work that has been ongoing in our district this year, led by our Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, Sandy Trach, and PreK-5 Department Head for ELA, Jenn Friedman.  Between the Steering Committee and Working Groups, a number of our district educators have been carefully evaluating literacy curricula, including our current programs, to assess their efficacy.  You can of this work to the School Committee from this past Tuesday night for more details.   

Finally, I also want to give a shout-out to our Performing Arts Department for the terrific spring choral concert last night.  Our students have incredible talent, and thanks to the work of Kevin McDonald and Chad Weirick, everyone in attendance was treated to an extraordinary evening of music.  Check out the Performing Arts webpage for the dates of a number of spring concerts coming up in the weeks ahead.

Another great event this week was our 8^th Grade Civics Fair, which has quickly become a staple of our spring calendar.  Students presented the results of their action projects, in which they examined a range of issues with local importance ranging from sustainability efforts, changes to school schedules, road safety, and tax breaks, just to name a sampling of topics. During the fair, they not only presented but also took questions from family members, staff, Town leaders, and members of the community.  Special thanks to WMS Social Studies Department Head Adam Blumer and the 8^th grade team for supporting our students in this important work.  

This week I was also pleased to share the news that I have appointed Dr. Stephen Goodwin as the Interim Principal of Schofield Elementary School, effective July 1^st.  Dr. Goodwin is no stranger to 无尽资源采集, having served as the Sprague Principal from 2010-2014.  Many thanks to the staff and parents who joined us yesterday to meet Dr. Goodwin in person as we begin to plan for his entry onto our team.

I hope you each had a productive week.  At 无尽资源采集鈥檚 annual Town Meeting this week, funding was approved for a feasibility study to examine the addition of air conditioning to Bates, Fiske, Schofield, and the Middle School.  The results of this study in the coming year will help the Town assess the method, timing, and associated costs to move forward with this work. Additionally, Town Meeting approved an amended version of an article to resurface the Hunnewell Tennis Courts, including double striping on two courts for pickleball.  It鈥檚 notable that the motion to bring this amended plan forward came from a Town Meeting Member who is also a student at WHS.  

You may be aware that last week, the U.S. Department of Education sent state leaders a communication requiring a certification of anti-discrimination practices in order to receive federal funds.听 The response from the MA DESE can be found . I鈥檓 grateful for the continued, consistent response from our state leaders in support of our work.听听

I hope you each had a productive week.  Each year, once we transition to April, the final months of the school year always seem to move at light-speed! 

This week, 无尽资源采集鈥檚 annual Town Meeting got underway with lengthy sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday night.  I鈥檓 pleased to report that the School Department budget passed as part of the Town鈥檚 omnibus budget.  As you know, this is essentially a level-service budget for FY鈥�26 as we strive to reconcile our largely fixed costs within the townwide financial plan.  We still have two other items on the Town Meeting warrant, including funds for both an air-conditioning feasibility study as well as resurfacing of the Hunnewell tennis courts.  

At the School Committee meeting on Thursday night, the Administration brought forward a recommendation for a new food service contract.  This was the culmination of a comprehensive RFP process, which resulted in Chartwells being recommended as the district鈥檚 food service provider beginning in FY鈥�26.  Special thanks to Cindy Mahr for leading this work along with the members of the selection review committee.  Additionally, the Administration brought forward a recommended firm to lead an audit of the district鈥檚 security infrastructure and procedures, which also followed an RFP process.  The School Committee will take action on this recommendation at an upcoming meeting.   

Finally, earlier this week, I also announced my intention to bring forward a recommendation to the School Committee for the appointment of Dr. Midge Connolly as the Interim Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, effective July1.  Dr. Connolly will be joining us after school on Monday to meet with staff and parents at 无尽资源采集 High School.

Condolences

Our sincerest condolences go out to Georgina “Gina” Condon’s family.听Gina passed away on March 31, 2025. 听Gina began working as a teaching assistant at the High School in 2021.听She worked directly with Ms. Hodges, Ms. Frazier, and Ms. Poltrino and the students in their classes during that time.听She also pushed into classes in Spanish and math to support students.听 Prior to 2021, Gina worked as a substitute teacher across the entire district.听Please听听for information for her services.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Doug Curtin, who was unanimously chosen by members of the EMISCA (Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) executive board and league representatives from throughout central and eastern Massachusetts as the recipient of the Jack McDonald Award. The award was established听in 1997, and is the association’s highest award, as it reflects upon a person whose values, efforts, and dedication to HS Swimming and Diving go beyond what would听be considered听normal or typical.听For over 25 years, award winners have been coaches, officials, and other very seasoned veterans of the sport.听Of note, typically, the Jack McDonald Award goes to those individuals听who have been involved with HS Swimming and听Diving for some time. Doug Curtin is modeling behaviors and actions while still a young coach, as he truly goes above and beyond what the word inclusion means, and makes all of his swimmers and divers feel a part of something that is bigger and more important than titles and league championships.

Timeline for WPS Enrollment of Faculty Children (Kindergarten 鈥� Grade 12)

Children of Unit A and B members residing outside of 无尽资源采集 shall be entitled to attend 无尽资源采集 without charge for tuition on a space available basis (Article 12, WEA, Unit A and B Contract).

Below is the timeline for submitting applications:

March 1:  Interested applicants may submit a letter of intent with the one-page application to the District Registrar, at .

May 1:  All applications are due to the District Registrar, late applications will not be accepted.

The district will review all  in May and school placement decisions will be made in June. Placement decisions are made based on available space and staff will be notified of their school when decisions have been made.  Once notified of a determination, applicants will be provided with access to the online registration forms.  Registration of students is not completed until all forms have been received and approved by the District Registrar and Nurse.

Human Relation Services

The Human Relation Services (HRS) can help.  无尽资源采集 has contracted with HRS to provide up to ten free counseling visits for you and/or your family members.  This program is designed to help you deal with stresses of life and work 鈥搃ncluding personal and family issues, drug or alcohol problems, and job related tension.  It offers prevention and intervention to reduce these stresses and improve coping skills.
