    Dear Colleagues,

After a dreary week of rain, today鈥檚 beautiful fall weather is most welcome and inspires me to rake some leaves, bake an apple pie, or carve a pumpkin! This morning at 无尽资源采集 High School, staff from the past and present came together for a rousing send-off for secretary Mary Donahue. Mary came to WHS 33 years ago and obviously touched the lives of so many students and staff during her tenure here. Such longevity in a career in a single location is rare by any measure today. It speaks well of our culture in WPS that we come together to mark important milestones such as Mary鈥檚 retirement today. It鈥檚 often been said that people will not remember what you say, but they will remember how you made them feel. Judging by the outpouring of love today for our colleague, I have little doubt about the mark that Mary has left at WHS. Mary Donahue, we thank you for your service and we wish you fair winds and following seas in the years ahead.

    Best regards,

The post Superintendent鈥檚 Bulletin 10/20/2017 first appeared on 无尽资源采集.]]>

    Dear Colleagues,

This week the state released the 2017 MCAS results from the spring administration of the exams.听 There was more attention than usual this year as this was the first administration of the next-generation MCAS exam.听 (The previous version is now known as the 鈥淟egacy version.鈥)听 With a more rigorous exam and a computer-based platform for some grades, it was anticipated that scores across the state would drop, which was confirmed upon receipt of our official results.听 Not only was the test different, but the scaling and score reporting were also different.听 The new scale is defined by 鈥淓xceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations, and Not Meeting Expectations.鈥澨 With all of these changes, it is difficult to compare our year-over-year progress as we have done in the past, as the new and previous versions of the exam are not comparable.听 In short, 2017 is a new baseline year.

With all of this as context, it will undoubtedly be more challenging to convey the meaning of these exams to students, parents, and our community.听听We are fortunate that WPS has never been a district that has been hyper-focused on MCAS or any other individual assessment.听 Regardless of the new or future versions of this test, we should always put these results in the proper context, which is that they do provide some useful longitudinal data for the District, particularly as we monitor gaps in achievement between student groups that can inform our equity agenda and actions.听 At the same time, we will never measure our progress based on a single exam that does not assess many of the elements of our work that we value as much or more than what is assessed on MCAS.

Thanks to each of you for the important work you do each day to support our students and have a great weekend.

    Best regards,

    David Lussier

    Dear Colleagues,

Last week I attended the EdLeader21 Conference in Atlanta with several members of our staff. It was a terrific conference that brought together school districts from around the country engaged in 21st Century Learning work. A few important themes stood out to me from the conference:

    1. The importance of establishing a 鈥淧rofile of a Graduate.鈥 What knowledge, skills and habits of mind do we want all of our WPS graduates to have? This can be an incredibly effective process to clarify district/community expectations and to calibrate our practice. We will actually begin this process later this fall when Ken Kay from EdLeader21 joins us for our November PD day.
    1. How often do students engage in performance tasks that mirror the type of problem-solving they are likely to face in the real world? I was struck by the degree to which students in some districts are engaged in addressing actual issues within their communities, creating a sense of ownership and passion that we know are the hallmarks of high-quality education experiences.
    1. 鈥淲hat functions of a school can students perform?鈥 This was the framing question that preceded a student panel discussion we attended. More and more schools are considering ways in which the students themselves can help run schools such as in technology support, running credit unions, monitoring energy use, etc.

In short, I was left feeling inspired that the traditional model of schooling is really beginning to change as educators and school partners work together to ensure that our programs and expectations are better aligned with the competencies that our students will need to be successful in college, career, and life. I鈥檓 very excited that WPS is part of this network of districts and thought partners looking to the future.

Thanks to each of you for the important work you do each day to support our students. Have a great weekend.

    Best regards,

    David Lussier

    Dear Colleagues,

Our week began with many of us waking up Monday morning and learning of the tragic details of the shooting in Las Vegas. As educators, we are expected to be a resource for students and families struggling to understand how these events can happen. It strikes me that some of the honest conversations happening in classrooms around this topic are not happening with much impact among policymakers. Like many people, in the wake of each of the mass shootings of the past 5-6 years, I have been hopeful that we had reached a tipping point as a nation and could reach consensus on what common sense gun control measures could look like. And of course, each time I have been disappointed as the fervor of the moment has dissipated and nothing has changed鈥ntil the next tragedy when the cycle begins anew. I refuse to believe that this is the new normal, and I refuse to accept that we can鈥檛 find a middle ground that balances 2nd Amendment Rights with the type of reasonable regulations that already govern most aspects of our lives. It鈥檚 time for some courageous conversations. It鈥檚 time to break this cycle.

Thanks to each of you for the important work you do each day to support our students and have a great long weekend.

    Best regards,

    David Lussier
